Foundation PRODEV is a non-profit, non-political foundation officially recognized by the City Hall of Port-au-Prince. PRODEV was established in 1995 with the mission to use positive initiatives focused on education and youth to advance Haiti’s development. The scope of PRODEV’s work has expanded over time to address the evolving needs of Haiti’s children. Beginning in 2006, PRODEV, in its desire to educate the country’s most vulnerable youth, operated a primary school within a detention center for minors. The devastating earthquake of January 2010 propelled PRODEV to another level of service and within 3 months of the earthquake, PRODEV was running 14 schools and 8 kindergartens in various camps in Pegguy Ville and Cite Soleil. This post-earthquake experience further exposed the gaps and weaknesses of the Haitian educational system and strengthened PRODEV’s resolve to address this problem. As a result, PRODEV has taken a leading role in an ambitious effort to create a network of high quality schools throughout Haiti. It is in this context that PRODEV now manages 3 schools. These schools are Ecole Nouvelle Zoranje in Village de la Renaissance, Institution Mixte Union des Aprotre in Cite Soleil and Ecole Nouvelle Royal Caribbean in Labadee.
As an educational institution working for at-risk communities, PRODEV’s strategy hinges on the principle that quality schools are the product of strong and engaged communities. PRODEV’s activities to include efforts to outreach to neighborhoods where the schools are located to engage parents and stakeholders in the collective endeavors needed to ensure quality education for children. This includes economic development to help alleviate the financial burden of education many parents feel.
